So with the decent success of last year, I again signed up for too many reading challenges. I could blame A Novel Challenge for the bountiful selection, but when you get right down too it, I only have myself to blame. In all aspects of my life, this year I want to tie up loose ends. I’m all about finishing the old before moving onto the new this year. In my knitting, finishing up projects that I have started and in my reading goals to take a huge chunk out of my TBR list and books I all ready own. 2014 Reading Challenge Wrap Up

Boy, I was a lazy blogger this past year. I want to improve on that this year. So a wrap up on last years reading challenges.

Erotic Reading Challenge: I signed up for 81-100+ level, it wasn’t until I saw the same challenge this year that I comprehended I had included books that weren’t quite the genre. My mistake and therefore I don’t want to count the 123 books I read for it.

Historical Romance Challenge 12 books Set prior to 1920 I enjoyed this challenge as I love a good historical and I discovered a new western author that I enjoyed greatly. Mary Connealy, she writes clean Western romances, almost a bit Christian, but not preachy. I really enjoyed her characters and the story lines in the trilogy. I read 13 books for this challenge.

Bingo Challenge I achieved a black out card. The categories were TBR, Mix it up, Series, Genres and New Releases For three categories I had to read  15 books each and the other two 4 books each. I enjoyed this challenge particularly the mix it up and genres categories as I had to read new authors and different types of books than I normally would.

Alphabet A-Z Challenge I failed this challenge as I didn’t get books read for Q, X, Y, and Z

Sea Haven Series Reading Challenge This is two series of books by Christine Feehan. I had read the Drake Sisters series previously, but re read them for this challenge and the last three books of the challenge were her Sisters of Heart Series which is ongoing. I had read the first two, but the latest one I had not. Loved it and dying for the next book.

Immortals After Dark Series by Kresley Cole Challenge I love her and her books, I was behind in this series by 4 books so this was a great chance for me to catch up. I adored Lothaire and especially Dark Skye. Great reads.

Nightwalkers Series by Jacquelyn Frank Challenge I had read one novella by her in an anthology and was intrigued. So I was happy to see this challenge come along. There were 13 books in this challenge divided into 3 series. They were interconnected, but different at the same time. I can’t wait to see where it goes next. I really liked the Shadowdwellers series and the Skinwalkers series.

Book to Movie Challenge 3 combinations

I read/watched Labor Day by Joyce Maynard. The book was exceptional. I highly recommend it. Now of course, when I love the book so much I have reservations about seeing the movie. I was pleasantly surprised, it was pretty close to the book and maintained the integrity of the characters and story line. (Unlike The Cider House Rules, amazing, wonderful book, the movie well I will never get those two hours of my back. It destroyed the beautiful story John Irving created.)

I also read Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll I watched the newish Alice in Wonderland with Johnny Depp. Obvious differences, but not in a bad way, because Lewis Carroll created an extremely bizarre world that really was open for interpretation. I really think Tim Burton was crazy enough to pull it off.

I also read/watched Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks. I very much enjoyed the book, the movie not so much. It left some pertinent parts out and glossed over others and created things that had no place being there. I also just didn’t like the casting.

So in total I read 129 books in 2014, which brings me to the Perpetual Challenge Read a Million Pages in Your Lifetime. In 2014 I read 45, 091 pages. I want to do better this year.

In retrospect, the best book, I read this year was a recommendation from a client. It was way outside my comfort zone and I never would’ve picked it up on my own. It was The Martian by Andy Weir. A truly amazing read, the man knew his scientific stuff, so sometimes I got a bit bogged down, but it was just a small part of the book. Wonderful character building and boy did he put the main character through hell. I just read that its been optioned for a movie with Matt Damon. Again a great level of trepidation, though I think Matt Damon’s a decent casting choice.

The worst book I read this year was Agatha Christie’s The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. It wasn’t to my liking, the first and maybe only mystery I will read. I don’t want to rule it out in the future, as I’ve had some great recommendations. Just not another Christie. Though she did get me at the end and I’m pretty good at figuring it out as I read along. So kudos there! There is a down and dirty recap of the year. In my next post I will be outlining my challenges for 2015. Happy  reading!

April Book Challenge Recap

I’m running late on this update, I started a new job a few months ago and while I love being a caregiver it wears me out. I’m in good position on my challenges. I’m pretty happy about it, so far.  Let’s get into the monthly progress.

I read 14 books for the erotic reading challenge, bringing me to 51/81-100+

Dash of Peril Lori Foster I love her books and I’d been waiting for this one, though it was the end of a series so I was a little bummed as well. It was all I hoped for. She writes such a great, encompassing story, not just sex. A great read.

Tempted Rebecca Zanetti I discovered her through an excerpt in the back of a book a few years ago and it took me awhile to get hold of her books, this is I believe the fourth book in the series and it was an ebook novella. I loved it of course . She has a different take on vampires where they are actually aliens. Its different and fun. I recommend starting with the first book, Fated.

Labor Day Joyce Maynard Oh my, where to start? This was a divine book, in my hall of fame of greats. It was a beautiful story, full of tough choices and heartbreak and redemption at the end. It made me cry at the end. A heartfelt recommendation.

Dark Deeds at Nights Edge Kresley Cole This is one of my favorite books in the series, I adore Conrad Wroth and his relationship with his brothers and Neomi. A great read.

Wild Wolf Jennifer Ashley This is her newest and I’ve been waiting eagerly for it. I LOVE her Shifters Unbound series and I was so excited about Graham and Misty’s story and it didn’t disappoint.

Dark Desires After Dusk Kresley Cole This is another favorite from the series, I’ve always had a soft spot for Cadeon and in this book his struggle for redemption against the one woman that is his own. Its a wonderful read.

Play of Passion Nalini Singh This is part of her Psy Changling series. It wasn’t a bad read, not my favorite in the series, but I love how the books are interconnected how the story is building.

Kiss of Snow Nalini Singh Another Psy Changling book. I’ve been waiting to read this one, I’ve always liked Hawk and his dynamic with Sienna, this book was pivotal in the story line as things came to a head.

Wild Invitation Nalini Singh this is an anthology of three novellas, loved them all. Stroke of Enticement in another anthology was how I discovered this series.

Dark Celebration Christine Feehan This was a unique book as it caught up with all the couples from the previous books and a tease to a future book that I’m chompin at the bit to get to. I really enjoyed this one.

Dark Possession Christine feehan I like Virkinoff and his relationship with Natalya, its a little less intense than some of the other books and I liked it for that change.

Tangle of Need Nalini Singh I liked this book with riaz and Adriana and the ups and downs and the fight for their relationship. One of my favored books in the Psy Changling series.

Otherwise Engaged Amanda Quick This was her brand new book and it was a bit of a stray from her usual style and I loved it anyway or because of it. She chose a bit of a later time period and therefore a bit of a different mindset. A great read.

Kiss of a Demon King Kresley Cole This is a bit of an intense book, but then Rydstrom is a little intense. I love Sabine and how she’s true to herself and all shades of grey.

In addition I also read Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll. It was all sorts of crazy, but entertaining.

I also read The Time Machine by  H G Wells It was interesting and as always a little dark. I enjoyed it greatly.

Historical Reading challenge 7/12

Otherwise Engaged Amanda Quick

I have three bingos toward the blackout.

Immortals After Dark Challenge 7/15

I have read Labor Day waiting for the movie to come from Netflix

I watched The Book Thief from Netflix, it was a wonderful gripping movie, so I’m thrilled for the book.

I’m currently reading two historicals and a Carpathian novel.

March Reading Challenge recap

I’ve been reading like crazy, when I haven’t been knitting or going crazy spring cleaning! It’s been a long hard winter here in NW Ohio and I’m more than ready to wave bye bye.

Exciting news, I’m now a volunteer at my local library. I’ve been obsessed with the library since a small girl, so its super exciting to be on the other side of the desk. I was all geeked out for a week. Its an hour a week, which works well for both my schedule and theirs. I’ll be in charge of the book sale donations keeping them organized. It was divine and I look forward to Friday!

So let’s get started at a glance I read 14 books, totaling 4,888 pages. This is my highest total for the year so far. In total I have 12,508 pages toward my million page perpetual challenge.

For the Erotic Reading Challenge: 37/81-100

Wildest Dreams Jayne Ann Krentz This was a new anthology of two of her older novels. I love her older books always a strong alpha man and an equally spunky woman.

Gideon Jacquelyn Frank This is the second book in the Nightwalkers series. I really enjoyed this book, I loved his story and his need to protect Legna from himself.

Deception Cove Jayne Castle I was so looking forward to this book. I love Jayne Ann Krentz’s alter ego with futuristic novels. I really love her worlds of Harmony and Rainshadow Island. Always a winner.

Wyoming Bold by Diana Palmer I read this out of order, which I hate to do. I’ll be grabbing the rest of the series later this year. I love Diana Palmer, she writes such heartwarming westerns. And I love a good western romance. I hadn’t read anything by her in awhile, I’ve been on such a paranormal romance kick, I forgot what well developed characters she builds.

Kiss of Steel Bec McMaster This was a brand new author for me and OMG! I’m hooked, I adore her world, her people and goodness knows I LOVE steampunk. Its not what I would call a hardcore steampunk, but certain elements are there. This is a must read book.

Wicked Deeds on a Winters Night Kresley Cole This is part of her Immortals After Dark series. This is one of my favorites of the series. I adore poor tortured Bowen, he finally gets his happy ending after 180 years.

Lone Wolf Jennifer Ashley This is part of her Shifters Unbound series. I adore these books. And I finally got to read this one, as an ebook because it wasn’t available as a physical book. I’ll spare you my opinion on ebooks, but it was so worth it. I’ve adored Ellison from the start and I’ve been eagerly waiting for his story. I loved reading his history, his struggles and finally his love. All he ever wanted was a mate of his own.

Tarnished Knight Bec McMaster This was an ebook novella and it was so worth downloading. Again I love her style, her world, the characters. This was Rip’s and Esme’s story. It was a true love story with a bunch of bumps along the way.

Heart of Iron Bec McMaster This has been my favorite book of the series. I fell for Will from the start and I’ve wanted to know his story. It was heartbreaking and exhilarating all at the same time. A definite read.

The Twilight Before Christmas Christine Feehan This is the second book of the Drake Sisters series. I adore the byplay between Matthew and his brother that makes Kate so self conscious. As usual Feehan delivers a gripping story line.

Honey and The Hired Hand Joan Johnston This is an older western that is a charming story. I didn’t realize that its part of a larger series. I will be looking into reading those later in the year.

The Guardian Elizabeth Lane This has been on my TBR shelf since 2005. A long time coming and it was a sensational and wonderfully well written historical western. I loved Black Sun, he was trying so hard to be true to his people, but he couldn’t shake the hatred he had for the white people until one pregnant scared woman crossed his path.

Dark Demon Christine Feehan This is part of her Carpathian series. I adore the evolving story line that moves from book to book. I had fallen for Vikirinoff In his brother’s book. I was so curious about him under his stoic exterior and it delighted me to see him at the end of the book show a playful, mischievous side.

Bite Me Shelly Laurenston This is the brand new book in her Pride series. I have anticipated this book for months. Its such a wonderful feeling to have a book live up to that build up. It was witty, laugh out loud funny and showed more of Vic that we barely got to meet in the last book. I loved the honey badger family antics. A must read.

I’m currently reading Dash of Peril by Lori Foster, amazing. I have Labor Day on hold at the library, which the new movie by the same name is based on. I’m very excited to start that. I have all of the remaining Immortals After Dark books as well. I’m so excited about all the books I have, its hard to decide what to read next. Happy Reading!

2013 Recap and 2014 Challenges
March 15, 2014, 1:57 am

Well, my blog fell by the wayside partway through the year when our computer crashed and burned. Honestly, I wasn’t going to try to keep up with it from our Kindle. I despise typing of any kind on that thing. I’m writing this from my husband’s new laptop, he insisted on a touchscreen. After my first try on it, I announced he was nuts and it’s stupid. This is my second try and I’m still on the fence. All I know is that when my new job hopefully comes through I am not getting a touchscreen.

So last year was my first round of challenges from A Novel Challenge. I learned some lessons and had a great time. I’m not going to lie, I stopped counting my books toward the last month. So I’m guessing that I read around 240 books. Lessons I learned, I can get bored, secondly I joined way too many challenges. I failed a lot of my challenges. I did not want to repeat that it bummed me out. So I chose my challenges far more carefully this year.

My 2014 challenges are as follows:

For the erotic reading challenge I read:

Hostage to Pleasure Nalini Singh This is part of the Psy Changling series I love this series and all of the books are great.

Christmas Heat Lora Leigh This is a novella part of the Breeds Series. Again I love this series, its steamy!

Dark Destiny Christine Feehan Part of the Carpathian series, her books are original. Granted they may take a bit longer to read, but so worth it.

Cheyenne Amber Catherine Anderson This has been the book of the year so far for me. It was a historical romance, but less on the sex and more on the romance. It was a western with the Cheyenne and a tenderfoot woman who had her baby stolen by Mexicans and she had to rely on a Cheyenne raised rancher to get him back. It was just sublime and I’m not doing it justice.

Branded by Fire Nalini Singh Another Psy Changling book.

Beckman Grace Burrowes This the fourth book in her Lonely Lords series. I love these books, they are beautifully written with well developed characters. They have real problems and issues that leave you loving them even more for their flaws.

Oracles Moon Thea Harrison This part of her Elder series. I love these books and this is my favorite of the series, it was a reread that I had to devour again.

Blaze of Memory Nalini Singh This is another Psy Changling book. I do believe that this is my favorite or at least co favorite of the series.

Burning Up Angela Knight, Nalini Singh, Virginia Kantra and Meljean Brooks I love anthologies it gives me a chance to discover new authors. Like Meljean Brooks new steampunk series. Oh do I love Steampunk.

Dark Secret Christine Feehan I really enjoyed this Carpathian novel. I liked how dominating Rafael was and how Colby pushed back.

Bonds of Justice Nalini Singh This is my favorite Psy Changling book. I loved the characters.

Atlantis Betrayed Alyssa Day This is part of her Lords of Atlantis series. I enjoy how different each Lord is and how the story is unfolding through each book.

So in total I read 12 books in January.

In the Historical Challenge

Cheyenne Amber

The Bingo challenge I’m making great progress on however I will announce when I have a Bingo, though my real goal is to black out my board.

The Alphabet challenge I read books for the letters: A, B, C, D, H, and O

The Million Page Challenge I read 4,129 pages

In February this is what I accomplished.

Erotic Reading Challenge

1. The Warlord Wants Forever Kresley Cole This is the first book In the Immortals After Dark series. I’ve read most of this series, but I missed  this book. It was a great starting point for the world of Lore as two enemies fell in love. It was a good read.

2. Reckless Nights Jayne Ann Krentz This was a new release of two of her older books together. I love her old stuff, the age old war of the sexes.

3. Jacob Jacquelyn Frank This was a new one for me. I had read her novella Kane in an anthology and had been curious about the series and finding a challenge this year was kismet. I really enjoyed the world she created. Jacob is a demon, but not the biblical kind. It was a great read.

4. Hard Mated Jennifer Ashley This is part of her series, I really love this book. Spike is such a wonderfully misunderstood man. I love the heartbreak that brings him together with his mate and cub.

5. A Hunger Like No Other Kresley Cole This was the first book I had originally read in the Immortals After Dark series. I loved the world she had created and the strong unique characters. It made me want to read more.

6. Rule Breaker Lora Leigh I was eagerly awaiting this newest release in the Breeds Series and it didn’t disappoint. Rule was more complex than the other books had let on and it was delicious.

7. Do or Die Suzanne Brockmann I’ve read a lot of her books in the past so I was curious about this new series. It was a bit of a departure and I loved it. The main guy was troubled and misunderstood and I can’t wait for the next book.

8. Magic in the wind Christine Feehan This is the first book in the Sea Haven books. Its short almost like a novella and sets the stage for the series. Its one of my favored books. I love the Sea Haven series, I’ve read all of them.

9. Hot In Here Lori Foster This was an anthology of three of her books. I loved it. I so enjoy her books.

10. Reapers Property Joanna Wylde This was a brand new author for me. And WOW! It was gritty, raw and steamy. It was a great read.

11. No Rest for the Wicked Kresley Cole This is another Immortals After Dark book. One of my favorites actually. I love Sebastian, actually all of the Wroth brothers. I love Kaderian the Cold Hearted. The books are funny and fun.

Okay onto March, there’s a lot to report! Here’s the totals. And my plans for April.

65) My Phony Valentine Marie Ferrerella This was a charming story of the old switcheroo by nearly identical cousins. It was touch and go for a while but all works out in the end.

66) Rogue Rider Larissa Ione Oh beautiful tormented Respeth. A winner as always, this was one of my favored books. And a big twist at the end, kinda saw it coming but still wow! Cannot wait til the next book.

67) Lady X’s Cowboy Zoe Archer Wowzers! I’ve been reading her Blades of the Rose series, but this was a stand alone and it was hot! So fast paced, I couldn’t put it down. A must read.

68) Stormy Challenge Jayne Ann Krentz writing as Stephanie James This was another oldie but goodie. They meet under false pretenses and she hates him for the deception, but gets over it eventually.

72) The Lost Night Jayne Castle This is the second book of the Rainshadoew Island series. I adored the hero, he was dark, tormented and brooding.

73) Warrior Zoe Archer This is the first novel of the Blades of the Rose series. I find them interesting and well written, they can be a little slow to get through, but then halfway through I get sucked in and can’t put them down. This one followed Gabriel and Thalia in Mongolia, its action packed and steamy.

74) The Challoner Bride Jayne Ann Krentz writing as Stephanie James This was a play on arranged marriages, but not quite. It was an interesting book with a lot of emphasis on family history.

75) Wizard Jayne Ann Krentz writing as Stephanie James This was a fun playful novel about  woman born to academics that wasn’t quite as brainy as they had hoped, she flees to live her own life. A brilliant mathematician a friend of her parents, visits her while at a company they dance around and she falls for him.

76) Living with the Dead Kelley Armstrong This was a story that brought in a bunch of new people and I can’t wait to see where these new characters come into play into the future.

77) Kitsungeri Kelley Armstrong I love Jeremy, the werewolf Alpha. This was a short story about his mother’s family.

78) Zen and the Art of Vampirism Kelley Armstrong Gotta love Zoe, she’s a kick ass female and brainy.

79) Riding the Shore of the River Death Kate Elliott This was a novella in a fantasy anthology and it was interesting though I get the feeling that its part of something bigger. It was unique and I enjoyed the roles and the story of the people.

80) From Russia With Love C E Murphy Loved this tale, I’ve read several variations of the Russian witch that flies in a mortar and her house has chicken legs. This was her daughter’s story.

81) Words Like Coin Robin Hobb I enjoyed this different story, it had a good meaning about how words can affect a person.

82) Raven’s Prey Jayne Ann Krentz writing as Stephanie James This story took us to Mexico where a dangerous but good-hearted man tried to take a woman back to her supposed father. I enjoyed this story more than others!

83) Man With a Past Jayne Ann Krentz A man who reinvented himself finds himself using the skills that he honed in the first part of his life keeping him and the woman he loves alive when a business trip goes awry. She has to learn to trust him when he doesn’t want to talk about the past.

86) Gift of Gold Jayne Ann Krentz A man running from himself finds himself in a vegetarian cafe washing dishes for a tyrant. She turns out to be the one who can save him from himself.

89) Rebel Zoe Archer The third book of the Blades of the Rose this time Astrid Bramfield suffering from the loss of her husband takes herself to the wilds of frontier Canada. My favorite of the series I adore Nathan Lespernace an Earth Spirit he can take the forms of the wolf, the bear and the red tail hawk.

90) Stranger Zoe Archer The conclusion of the Blades of the Rose series. This time Catullus Graves, the mastermind inventor  who meets Gemma Murphy in Canada, but their romance blooms in England as they battle the Heirs of Albion for the control of the world’s magic.

91) Angelic Kelley Armstrong A novella revisiting Eve Levine in her afterlife as an ascended angel and her thoughts about it.

92) Holly’s Balm Rachel Caine The next installment of resurrection witch Holly’s journey with her main squeeze Andy.

93) Snow Job Carole Nelson Douglas A short story that takes place in the middle of a story line so I was a little lost, but quite intrigued to look for the other books.

I’m sitting in excellent shape to complete the Read A Latte challenge and I’ll be moving to the next level soon. I’m currently reading Affair of Honor by Jayne Ann Krentz writing as Stephanie James. I’m also reading  Devil’s Kiss by Zoe Archer its the first book of a new series Hellraisers. This will count for the April theme of Demons. I’m whittling down my enormous stack of library books, I’m not requesting new books so I can start to tackle my other challenges. Though I won’t lie I requested the new Black Dagger Brotherhood novel, I’ve been so looking forward to it. Also Shelly Laurenston’s new Wolf With Benefits. I love her books, she’s hilarious.

I’m pretty behind in getting my posts up. I’ll take the time today to wrap up February and March today. I have lots to report so let’s get started.

Library Book Challenge (50+)

56) Dark Light Jayne Castle I enjoy her books based in Harmony and the heroes that can use different forms of ghost light excite me. So loved this guy.

57) The Family Way Jayne Ann Krentz A strong man who isn’t ready for a family gets a rude awakening when the woman he’s been taking for granted leaves him when she finds out she’s pregnant. It was a book about personal growth.

58) Chances Are Barbara Delinsky I’ll be honest I don’t remember this one very well. My fault for not getting myself in gear and updating in a timely manner.

59) Presumed Guilty Tess Gerritsen I enjoyed this book, it was about looking beneath the surface and not judging too hastily.

60) The Cowboy Jayne Ann Krentz This is the third of a series The Pirate, The Adventurer and the Cowboy. This one was a little edgier with a stronger heroine.

61) Murdered at Last Chance Ranch BJ Daniels This was a short story that reunited two old flames in the light of a murder.

62) The Cougar Lindsay McKenna I loved this book, I will be looking for more books by her. I loved the ugly family history that they both wanted to let go and move on. He was so sweet and loveable.

63) Obsidian Prey Jayne Castle I had never read this one before and it was a doozy! Loved the adventure, the mistrust and finally the trust and love. I love the Sweetwater men, they need more books.

64) The Main Attraction Jayne Ann Krentz This about a woman who reinvented herself and goes home for her sister’s wedding. She causes quite the stir and catches the attention of several men one from her past and one that wants to be her future.
