Coming in a littler later than usual with a progress report.  I’ve made significant progress with 10 books read since my last check in. So lets dive right in.

Library Book Challenge (50+)/Read A Latte (cappuccino 100)/Romance Challenge (at least 5)

13) Crystal Flame Jayne Ann Krentz This was one of her older paranormal novels. it was new to me and as usual she delivered. She always has such well-formed characters with strong voices. The story was fast paced and interesting. And she finished the story, one of my biggest grievances is when the story ends abruptly with no follow-up, where I’m left wondering well what happens next? White Teeth by Zadie Smith did this to me and three years later I still find myself wondering the h*** happened. So it’s always a good thing in my book, as it drives me frickin nuts otherwise.

14) Dream Eyes Jayne Ann Krentz This is her brand new book that I couldn’t wait to get my hot little hands on. This is the second book in the Dark Legacy trilogy, Copper Beach was the first. Again she writes such strong men, yet equally as strong women. I love her paranormal books, she has always focused more on the story then the sex. I really can’t wait to see what happens in the next book, I have my ideas and I can’t wait to see if I’m right.

15) Sweet Starfire Jayne Ann Krentz This was one of her older futuristic novels. I have to say it was one of my favorites that I’ve read. I loved the story it was unique, not a take that I’ve read a bunch of different ways. She always has such well researched books, really shows her roots as a librarian. A secret dream of mine would be to walk around inside her head barefoot to soak up some of her awesomeness. I will recommend this one greatly.

16) The Fire King Marjorie M Liu I love her books she’s so unique and her books are interesting. This one really did not disappoint, in fact my second favorite book of the Dirk and Steele series.  Her novella in Dark Dreamers A Dream of Stone and Shadows remains my favorite. I loved Charlie. I will say that The Fire King was intense and fast paced. I didn’t see part of the ending coming, it was pretty exciting. I’m glad he wasn’t disillusioned.

17) Soft Focus Jayne Ann Krentz Not one of my favorites by her, but honestly she doesn’t write a bad book. Again her research is top-notch and she’s always cutting edge. All I can say is egg sucking bastard, what a great line.

18) Industrial Magic Kelley Armstrong I came across her by chance and I’m so glad I did! I love her books, this one was fast paced and I loved getting to know Lucas better, seeing the family dynamics. Jaime Vegas is a hoot and I’m looking forward to her book and I can’t wait to see if she stirs Jeremy up. Fast paced and edgy!

19) No Control Shannon K Butcher I love her Sentinel books and I came across this romantic suspense at the library. It’s a reread, but damn its one of my favorites. I adore Caleb, he’s so strong and compassionate. I couldn’t wait for the first book No regrets to arrive from the interlibrary loan to dive into this book. This is on my to find and buy list. (I deplore new books, I love the hunt of finding used books at thrift stores, garage sales and used book stores. Used books have such personality.)

20) Fear the Darkness Alexandra Ivy I loved the Guardians of Eternity series and I fell for Caine a little at the end of the last book. He became such a relucant hero. Though the book left me wondering about the story line for the next book Avenge the Darkness. I’m looking forward to Santiago, he’s been a tease thus far.

21) Serpent’s Kiss Thea Harrison Oh what a talent she is! I can’t stop raving about her books! They transport you, she’s such a vivid writer and I figuratively devour her books. This one was no different, I whipped through it curled under my electric blanket and comforter with three dogs. It was only 2 degrees yesterday here in Northwestern Ohio. I don’t know what the wind chill was, but yikes too cold for me.

No new books read for Vampire January in my Paranormal Challenge, however I’m gearing up for Angel February! I’m revisiting an old favorite collection! The Books of Samaria by Sharon Shinn, Archangel, Jovah’s Angel, The Alleluia Files, Angelica and Angel Seeker, along with a couple of novellas. So excited to re read these.

I’m still waiting for Thousand and One Nights to come in to the library. I’m going to ask about it today when I head in to pick up a few on hold. My library books are under control so I will be starting Interview with the Vampire (I own it, along with most of the other books).

What I’m working on right now, Oracle’s Moon Thea Harrison, shaping up to be one of my favorites, Haunted by Kelley Armstrong starting slow, but will pick up. I love Eve Levine, she’s such a badass. I will also be starting Serpent in Paradise by Jayne Ann Krentz and next on the list is Lethal Rider by Larissa Ione. So no end in sight for me, yipee!!

January’s clipping along and so am I! I’m making excellent progress and reading awesome books.

I also signed up for another challenge Banned Books. This is according the American Library Association’s list of banned/challenged books. It’s rather exciting and I was surprised how many books I had read on the lists. Also did you know that the Harry Potter books were challenged?? That’s a head scratcher. I signed up at the lowest level Making waves for 5 books. I’ve got a lot on my plate and I want to be sure I can reach my goals, as always I can always bump up to a higher level later in the year. The books I have selected so far and are subject to change, but probably not are:

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Maya Angelou

The Outsiders SE Hinton

American Psych Bret Easton Ellis

Slaughterhouse Five Kurt Vonnegut

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest Ken Kesey

I can crossover some of these books for my other challenges.

Onto my progress for the challenges.

Library Book Challenge (50+)

7) Fabulous Beast by Jayne Ann Krentz Wowzers this was a fun read, no one does a strong hero like Krentz. This was one of her old school novels that I hadn’t read before and it was a treat.

8) Night of the Magician Jayne Ann Krentz Again a strong hero but he had his work cut out with an equally strong heroine that wasn’t sure she liked him at all. It’s always fun when the man has to put out some effort in the chase.

9)Storms Heart Thea Harrison This is the second book in The Elder Race series. Oh what wonderful paranormal books they are. She has an amazing voice and style. I was particularly looking forward to this one with Tiago a Thunderbird and Nininan a Dark Fae. I can’t help it but a strong protective man does it for me.

10) Wanted: Undead or Alive Kerrelyn Sparks Phineas finally got his grove on. He’s so likeable and I was happy he got a happy ending with a twist.

11) Wild About You Kerrelyn Sparks This is the current book in the Love At Stake series. I like the shifters in the series and I’ve been curious about Howard the were bear. He really is a honey bear.

12) Dangerous Magic Jayne Ann Krentz writing as Stephanie James This was a doozy. I devoured it fast and with anticipation. He was tough and immune to her charm. She charmed her way through life and people, but he wasn’t swayed by her ways. It was fast paced and you know you were rooting for her to teach him l lesson on manners.

Same books above for the Read A Latte Challenge so 12/100

Same books as above for the Romance Challenge.

Wanted: Undead or Alive counted for the Paranormal Challenge so 4 for Vampire January.

Onto my current reads and planning aheads. I’m currently reading Crystal Flame by Jayne Ann Krentz. Its divine, I love her futuristic and paranormal works.

As of today I have in my hot little hands her brand new Dream Eyes which I’ll start when I’m done with Crystal Flame or before. It’s not uncommon for me to read two or three books at a time.

After that I have Fear the Darkness by Alexandra Ivy and Industrial Magic by Kelly Armstrong to start. I have also requested The Thousand and One Nights from the library to start my Bucket List Challenge. Off to read covered in dogs!

The books I’ve marked for the challenges were started on or after the 1st of January. This is the breakdown:

Library Book challenge(50+)/Read A Latte (100)/Romance Challenge

1) The Vampire and the Virgin Kerrelyn Sparks

2) East Prey Love Kerrelyn Sparks

3) Like a Wolf With a Bone Shelly Laurenston

4) Wed or Dead Cynthia Eden

5) Vampire Mine Kerrelyn Sparks

6) Sexiest Vampire Alive Kerrelyn Sparks

I’ve been pushing through this series as the latest book in the series is on hold and due back soon. I love Kerrelyn Sparks her books are funny and the story line is good. It’s just not steamy scenes. Shelly Laurenston is an all time favorite, she cracks me up! I’ve been hankering to reread her books, so I can work this in on the paranormal challenge later in the year. She also writes under G.A. Aiken with a dragon series. I have not read these so looking forward to it later in the year.

For the Paranormal Challenge

1) The Vampire and the Virgin Kerrelyn Sparks

2)Vampire Mine Kerrelyn Sparks

3) Sexiest Vampire Alive Kerrelyn Sparks

These are all from the Love at Stake series. She won me over. I was so happy to read Connor’s book (Vampire Mine). I liked his grumpy self. And honestly any man or vampire in a kilt, well I’m there.

I’m currently reading Wanted:Undead or Alive by Kerrelyn Sparks and as a break Industrial Magic by Kelley Armstrong. I love her Women of the Otherworld books. And a shot of old school Jayne Ann Krentz in Fabulous Beast, when she was writing as Stephanie James. I’m going through a Jayne Ann Krentz phase so expect to see a lot of it on the lists for this month.

Catching Up to Speed

Okay so we’re now on the 6th day of the new year. My birthday has once again rolled around and once again I couldn’t quite remember how old I’m supposed to be. Sad, but true. I’m not one of those women who freaked out when she turned 30 or this year 31. I have lots I still want to do and by George I will!  Though who to blackmail into dog sitting six dogs??? Well for now I’ll tackle my reading goals. My niece helped me with the last blog post explaining the library book challenge, this post will help explain the others. Then I’ll follow-up with the progress I’ve made and what I hope to get read.

The next challenge I am really looking forward to starting is the Bucket List challenge. These are books that are on your “bucket list” to read. This ties in perfectly with my 1001 Books to Read Before I Die list. I am really excited about this list. I signed up at the Committed Level of 12 books. Again I want to have feasible goals, because the guidelines state that you can’t decrease your goal, but as the year goes on you can bump up to the next level. That is my true goal to bump up to the next level.

Embarrassment of Riches is the next challenge this is for the people who buy books and say I’ll read that, but haven’t gotten around to it. I have some of these though for the most part I read my books. I signed up for the Bronze level to read 12 books. Again I’m going to use this challenge to read the books I’ve acquired for my 1001 Book list. I’m motivated to make a dent in it this year.

A challenge I’m excited about, it was the first challenge I signed up for. The Anne Rice Challenge. Oh how I love her. I have a goal on my 101 Things to Do in 1001 Days list to reread the Vampire Chronicles. So perfect. I’m at the Lestat de Lioncourt level to read 6-10 books which fits the Chronicles perfectly. I may bump it up later seeing where I’m at. I’d like to read the Sleeping Beauty trilogy.

I also signed up for the Read A Latte Challenge this is just a volume challenge as to how many books you can read in a year. I signed up at the Cappuccino level of 100. This is about average for me. I wouldn’t mind seeing if I can bump up to the next level of 150+. But again for now feasible.

Romance Reading Challenge, I won’t lie, I like me some smut. Also I like happy endings, I’m terribly sentimental, sometimes I cry. This challenge is a little unique as it’s a drawing, so however many books you read are the entries into the contest. So there’s really no set limit. Fun!

And finally this one tweaked my interest its a Paranormal reading Challenge. But, but what makes it cool is that there’s a subject for each month. As far as I can tell you only need to read at least one book per month.

This is the breakdown for the year:

January  Vampire

February Angels/Nephilim

March Fey

April Demons

May Aliens

June Zombies

July Witches and Wizards

August Mermaids

September Dragons

October Ghosts

November Werewolves/Shapeshifters

December Other

So really how cool is that, the wheels are all ready turning with ideas.

In a nutshell, there are my reading goals along with the Library Book challenge for the year. It’s a much needed fire under the arse. Seeing as how I love to make lists, really I love it!! I sat down a few days before the New Year and made up my lists and projections. Then I stewed for a few days waiting for it to begin. So without further ado this is my projections for the challenges.

The Library Book Challenge I have no set books to read other than the abundance I have currently checked out. I’m devoting January to my library books, then I will move on to the other lists. The thing I love about these challenges is that you can cross challenge with the other lists. So one book can count for multiple challenges. So even clearing out my library books I am making progress on several lists.

The Bucket List this is my goal going in chronological order from the end of my list the oldest to the newest this is what I hope to read

Thousand and One Nights

Gargantua and Pantagruel Francoise Rabelais

Don Quixote Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

The Pilgrims Progress John Bunyan

The Princess of Cleves Marie Madelaine Pioche de Lavergne, Comtesse de La Fayette

A Tale of a Tub Jonathan Swift

Robinson Crusoe Daniel Defoe

Love In Excess Eliza Haywood

Moll Flanders Daniel Defoe

Roxanne Daniel Defoe

Gulliver’s Travels Jonathan Swift

A Modest Proposal Jonathan Swift

For my Embarrassment of Riches Challenge I have so far

Gargantua and Pantagruel Francoise Rabelais

Don Quixote Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

Robinson Crusoe Daniel Defoe

Moll Flanders Daniel Defoe

Gulliver’s Travels Jonathan Swift

A Modest Proposal Jonathan Swift

I have a large gap of books that I would need to request from the library in my 1001 Book list before I have another book, so we’ll play the other half of this list by ear, ideally I would like to keep chipping away at the list. But if not I have other books to read that I have all ready purchased prior to the start of this list.

The Anne Rice Challenge

Interview with the Vampire

The Vampire Lestat

The Queen of the Damned

The Tale of the Body Thief

Memnoch the Devil

The Vampire Armand

Merrick

Blood and Gold

Blackwood Farm

Blood Canticle

I own most of these so I will be getting started probably around February.

Again with the Read A Latte Challenge no set list other than what I read from the library and my other challenges.

Romance challenge again what I have from the library.

Paranormal challenge whatever the month dictates, I have a few ideas of books I want to read, but nothing concrete so far. I’ll keep updating.

So this is what I have planned so far, I hope I can keep pushing the limits and of course challenging myself. Mostly I needed the reset to motivate myself again. My nest post will have the progress I’ve made so far since this turned into quite a large post!

New Year Blast Off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It has arrived… and I’m ready to go. In the interim waiting for today to arrive; I may have gone a bit crazy and joined a few more challenges. I have joined Read A Latte,Romance Reading, Paranormal Challenge!! I have issues… READING ISSUES!

First Challenge: Library Book Challenge

This challenge involves library books… of course! The goal is to utilize the library! There are different levels. I have chosen the Just Insert IV level which is 50+ within a calender year. I have a massive stack currently from the library that will make a huge dent in this goal! I am a  library book hoarder but I always return on time.

The three new challenges I set up for are Read A Latte, Paranormal reading challenge and Romance. I will explain them further in future posts.
