1001 Books May Update

Well I’ve been dealt a curve ball that I didn’t expect. I’ve become addicted to Facebook. So this has cut into my reading time sharply. I’ve acknowledged the issue and now to correct it. =) I didn’t make much progress, but I’m delighted to have finished Sabbath’s Theater by Philip Roth. It was not my favorite book by him. It really drug out in places then moved blindingly fast in others. Not an absolute terrible book, just not one I want to read again. I also started and finished Possessing the Secret of Joy by Alice Walker. Absolutely loved the book, but then Alice Walker writes amazing books. I have read all three of her books on the challenge list and have adored all three. The Color Purple, The Temple of my Familiar and Possessing the Secret of Joy, I highly recommend them to everyone.

I had some good luck and found some of my older titles on so I now own Gargantua and Pantagruel by Francoise Rabelais. I had also ordered the Princess of Cleves, but they were sold out. Bummer. I have not been able to find Aithiopika by Heliodrus or Chaireas and Kallirhoe by Chariton. I’ll see if I can get them from another library system sent to Toledo. Then I will have all the books from the pre1700 section. I discovered a bit late in the game that the books are in chronological order with the century. So I will read my way from the back to the front of the list. I flipped through the list this morning and got really excited about a lot of the books I have to read.

I’m currently reading For Whom the Bell Tolls by Hemingway and Oroonoko by Aphra Behn. I’m loving both of these books, so June is shaping up to be a great month. I will have Oroonoko done probably in the next day or so and then I will move onto The Golden Ass by Lucius Apuleius.

I’m sitting at having 37 books read and my goal is 50. I’m starting to get in trouble here, but I will keep plugging along and do what I can. Happy reading!

you’re in Toledo? I was just there… for a few hours anyway. I spent ten days in Cleveland and a friend of mine had to drive to Toledo for a business trip so I went with him – Perrysburg to be precise and then on to Findlay.

Anyway, you’ve got v4 of the spreadsheet to track all these books right? If not, head over to

Yes, I’m in Toledo. I have a printed list of the books that I mark off with a highlighter, well when the dog doesn’t get a hold of it and eat it. He’s quite attracted to pink. It works well to have a hard copy, I take it with me to the library and my favorite book store. Thanks for your interest in my challenge!
